New owners, same old floorboards — and roughly a century of stories holding the place up.
The building has stood on the edge of Hyde since 1927, watching the trains come and go and then, eventually, stop. When we found it, it needed a great deal of love and a fair bit of scaffolding. We decided it was worth both.
Today it’s a working cafe and a handful of boutique rooms, restored in careful stages — roofing, windows and plastering first — with the help of the Dunedin Heritage Fund. We’ve kept the character and quietly added the comforts: warm beds, good coffee, and dinner you don’t have to drive anywhere for.
We’re not a chain and we’re not pretending to be. It’s a family place, run by the people you’ll actually meet when you arrive.
Keeper of the spreadsheets, writer of e-mails, and the master of coin. He can also spin a good yarn and put back a few cold beverages.
Warning : Do not ask him about sporting injustices against New Zealand - unless you're well and truly settled into your seat.

The Zoo only consists of three cats and a dog - they're all from overseas thought, so technically exotic?
Six rooms, six Hyde families
Each room carries the name of a family that helped shape this corner of Central Otago. It felt right to keep them in the house.
